Initially, mirrors were made of highly polished metals and they are small in size.  And in the 1st century AD, from hand held pieces they evolved into full length mirrors.  While in the 16th century, heavy carvings and scrollwork or decorative metalwork was used to create ornate frames for the mirrors.  But a piece of glass backed with tin and mercury were the components used for creating the mirror itself.  This style spread throughout Europe which started in Venice.  By the end of the 17th century, silver, ebony, tortoiseshell and ivory were the materials being used to create mirrors and their frames.  Others use needlework and beads for the frames.  Frequent frames used in mirror for mantels are carved frames while replaceable frames are used for table mirrors.  If you find an antique mirror that you like, first take a photo of it and try putting it in the place where you want to put it to see if it will blend with the décor.

In buying round wall mirrors in general, try to avoid getting ones that are wavy and grayish looking.  Also do not buy thin antique wall mirrors for the reflection they produce is not good.  Lastly, do not get antique wall mirrors that decrease the size of the reflection.
